THE CHALLENGE
The Piping Designer plays a critical role in creating, maintaining, and controlling the engineering documentation that supports TURBINE-X’s modular and mobile power generation equipment throughout its lifecycle. Supporting both first-of-a-kind projects and standardized production, this position develops accurate piping designs, 3D models, fabrication drawings, isometrics, Bills of Materials, and technical documentation used across manufacturing, assembly, installation, and project execution.
Working closely with Engineering, Production, Procurement, Quality, and Project Management, you’ll ensure piping designs are safe, manufacturable, revision-controlled, and aligned with company standards and applicable codes. This role is ideal for an experienced designer who enjoys solving complex layout challenges, collaborating across disciplines, and producing practical engineering documentation that supports high-quality manufacturing.
WHAT WE'LL OFFER YOU
Piping Design & Engineering Documentation
- Create detailed Process Flow Diagrams, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, plot plans, fabrication drawings, and installation documentation.
- Develop and maintain accurate 3D piping models for modular and mobile power generation packages.
- Design piping layouts that support safe operation, maintenance access, equipment clearances, constructability, and operational ergonomics.
- Develop piping routing in accordance with applicable engineering specifications, project requirements, and industry codes.
- Generate Bills of Materials, material take-offs, line designation tables, equipment lists, valve lists, and part lists.
- Ensure drawings and models clearly communicate design intent and provide the information required for procurement, fabrication, assembly, and installation.
- Define and maintain piping design inputs, including piping specifications, component databases, design libraries, and intelligent modelling data.
- Ensure CAD platforms are properly configured to support accurate 3D modelling, intelligent P&IDs, isometric generation, and material reporting.
Model Coordination & Clash Resolution
- Perform clash detection and model coordination reviews across piping, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, controls, and equipment disciplines.
- Identify and resolve physical interferences before drawings are released for fabrication or construction.
- Coordinate piping layouts with equipment nozzles, pipe supports, access platforms, cable trays, structures, foundations, and service clearances.
- Support internal and customer-facing 3D model reviews and document required design changes.
- Work with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated layouts are practical, safe, and ready for manufacturing.
Drawing Control & Revision Management
- Develop and maintain engineering drawings throughout the product lifecycle using established document control procedures.
- Process engineering revisions, design improvements, redlines, field changes, and Engineering Change Requests while maintaining a complete revision history.
- Verify drawing accuracy, dimensions, specifications, tolerances, constructability, manufacturability, and completeness before release.
- Support engineering change management activities and formal drawing release workflows.
- Ensure released documentation is accessible to Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Production, Quality, and Project teams.
- Confirm that superseded drawings and models are replaced or removed from active points of use.
Manufacturing & Production Support
- Collaborate with Manufacturing and Production teams to improve drawing clarity, fabrication efficiency, assembly sequencing, and production readiness.
- Resolve drawing discrepancies and provide technical design support during fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing.
- Assist Engineering with prototype development, first-of-a-kind projects, production improvements, and product standardization.
- Participate in design reviews to confirm piping systems are practical to fabricate, assemble, inspect, test, operate, and maintain.
- Provide timely clarification of engineering documentation to support production schedules and reduce rework.
- Incorporate manufacturing feedback and lessons learned into future drawings, models, specifications, and standard designs.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Mechanical, Process, Structural, Electrical, Controls, Manufacturing, and Project Engineering teams to develop complete engineering packages.
- Coordinate with Procurement to ensure piping materials, specifications, components, and Bills of Materials are accurate.
- Partner with Quality to support inspection requirements, code compliance, material traceability, testing, and documentation.
- Support Project Management in preparing customer drawing packages, technical submittals, model reviews, and approval documentation.
- Coordinate with suppliers, fabricators, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical questions and design issues.
- Support client and third-party review comments and incorporate approved changes into controlled engineering documentation.
CAD Standards & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and maintain piping design standards, drawing templates, title blocks, libraries, databases, symbols, and engineering best practices.
- Create and improve piping design and drafting standards that support consistent project execution.
- Maintain and update piping specifications within applicable CAD platforms.
- Support engineering automation, model intelligence, drawing generation, and CAD workflow improvements.
- Maintain organized engineering records within document management, PDM, PLM, and ERP systems.
- Recommend improvements that enhance design quality, standardization, manufacturability, documentation accuracy, and engineering efficiency.
- Support the transition of successful first-of-a-kind designs into standardized and repeatable production documentation.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Experience
- Diploma or degree in Drafting Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Design Engineering Technology, Piping Design, or a related discipline.
- Industry experience appropriate for an intermediate or senior-level piping design position.
- Demonstrated experience producing piping designs and detailed engineering documentation within industrial manufacturing, engineered equipment, energy, or EPC environments.
- Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, CADWorx, SolidWorks, SmartPlant, or comparable 3D CAD and piping design software.
- Experience creating PFDs, P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, fabrication drawings, Bills of Materials, and material take-offs.
- Experience developing and maintaining piping specifications, CAD databases, design libraries, and intelligent model information.
- Strong understanding of industrial piping layout, fabrication, installation, testing, maintenance access, and constructability.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications, equipment data sheets, process information, structural drawings, and multidisciplinary design inputs.
- Experience using PDM, PLM, engineering document management, and revision control systems.
- Working knowledge of ERP systems, preferably Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or a similar platform.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Ability to lead design activities, coordinate technical work, and provide guidance to other members of the design team.
Codes and Technical Knowledge
- Strong working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.8, ASME B16, CSA B149, and CSA B51.
- Understanding of drafting standards, dimensioning, tolerancing, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing principles.
- Knowledge of piping materials, fittings, valves, flanges, supports, specialty items, and fabrication practices.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes involving welding, machining, structural steel fabrication, piping, electrical layouts, and industrial assembly.
- Ability to develop and maintain design standards, piping specifications, templates, and CAD workflows.
- Familiarity with modular power equipment, rotating equipment, gas turbine packages, generator packages, or related industrial systems is considered an asset.

- Familiarity with pipe stress analysis requirements, piping support coordination, and equipment nozzle load considerations.
- Experience supporting customer model reviews, technical submittals, and multidisciplinary design coordination.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality systems, engineering change processes, and controlled document workflows.
Initial Six-Month Priorities
- Learn and support the continued development of TURBINE-X piping design and drafting standards.
- Review, organize, and improve existing engineering drawings, models, specifications, and design libraries.
- Support active engineering projects with accurate drawing revisions, model updates, and technical documentation.
- Improve drawing consistency, model quality, and standardization across product lines.
- Assist Engineering with first-of-a-kind projects, prototype builds, and active production requirements.
- Support Engineering Change Requests, document release workflows, and revision control processes.
- Review CAD databases, piping specifications, templates, and libraries to identify improvement opportunities.
- Build strong working relationships across Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality, and Project Management.
