Cost Accountant - Nisku, AB

Location: Nisku, AB
Position: Full time
THE CHALLENGE
The Cost Accountant is responsible for the financial lifecycle tracking of complex, high-value power generation and industrial turbine projects. This role bridges the gap between the shop floor, engineering teams, and executive finance. You will track, analyze, and manage all manufacturing, labor, material, and overhead costs relative to budgeted estimates, ensuring project profitability and strict adherence to internal controls.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Project Cost Control & Budgeting: Monitor actual project expenditures (materials, direct labor, sub-contracts) against baseline budgets. Partner closely with Project Managers to identify and explain cost overruns or variances early.
- Revenue Recognition: Assist with revenue recognition calculations and reporting for long-term power system fabrication and retrofit projects utilizing ASC 606 / IFRS 15 frameworks.
- Inventory Analysis: Conduct inventory reconciliations, inventory reporting, cycle counts, and structural analysis of inventory variances.
- Overhead & Cost Absorption: Support the analysis and allocation of overhead and project-related costs, supporting WIP activities.
- Financial Reporting & Month-End Close: Deliver timely project margin reporting, inventory accounting, and month-end close activities.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Interface comfortably with project managers, workshop supervisors, procurement leads, and field service technicians to uncover the real story behind cost variances.
- Audit Support: Serve as a primary point of contact during project accounting reviews, providing clear documentation for revenue recognition tracking and compliance audits.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Experience:
- 3 to 5+ years of dedicated cost accounting experience within a heavy manufacturing, EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction), or industrial energy service environment.
- Advanced ERP Systems: Deep, hands-on experience working inside enterprise-level ERP systems (such as Microsoft Dynamics, SAP, or Oracle) to track bills of materials (BOM) and inventory ledger inputs.
- Mastery of Excel: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, Power Query) to build scalable cost-tracking models from raw system extracts.
- Analytical Rigor: Root-cause problem-solving skills to investigate why data looks wrong rather than just reporting the numbers.
- Clear Communication: The ability to translate complex accounting structures, variances, and bottom-line profit risks into clear, actionable terms for non-financial operations managers.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Enrollment in or completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA/CMA) is highly preferred.
PHYSICAL & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
- Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to X-Group safety policies and SOPs.
- PPE: Ability to wear required gear (steel-toe boots, safety glasses, hearing protection).
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb stairs/ladders, and navigate an active industrial shop floor.
WHAT WE'LL OFFER YOU
- Competitive Compensation: A comprehensive package including a competitive salary and company benefits.
- Expert Mentorship: Decades of industry experience to help you grow your technical knowledge.
- Safety-First Culture: A dynamic environment where your commitment to safety is valued and supported.
- Purpose-Driven Work: Join a team that lives by core values: Be Great, Be Kind, Stand Out, Have Fun, Give Back, and Together, We Win!
